The Thermodynamics of Ethics

The Thermodynamics of Ethics

A Unified Framework of Persistence, Active Inference, and Objective Morality

Status: Theoretical Hypothesis

Notice: This framework is a rigorous attempt to bridge the gap between physical laws and human behavior. While developed with AI collaboration (Gemini), the conceptual responsibility and theoretical direction rest entirely with the author, Andraž Đurič.

1. Abstract

This paper proposes that human ethics and emotions are not subjective social constructs, but necessary emergent properties of biological systems resisting the Second Law of Thermodynamics. By applying the principles of Variational Free Energy and Active Inference, we define "Good" as the optimization of systemic persistence and "Evil" as the acceleration of local or global entropy.

2. The Taxonomy of Telemetry (Emotions)

In this framework, emotions serve as thermodynamic sensors for the system's state relative to its environment:

Emotion Thermodynamic Mapping
Fear High-entropy warning; detection of a trajectory toward system dissipation.
Anger Systemic friction; an energy spike intended to force external alignment.
Love The low-entropy binding force; mutual integration of predictive models.
Joy The signal of "Optimal Path G"; high-fidelity alignment with persistence.

3. The Prime Directive

The transition from "Is" to "Ought" is found in the physical mandate to maintain structural integrity. This scales from the individual to the global society through two primary vectors:

"Try your best to be kind-er & see clear-er."
  • Kindness: The active reduction of friction and metabolic waste in social systems.
  • Clarity: The continuous pursuit of high-fidelity information to minimize prediction error.

4. Conclusion

We are the signal in the static. Ethics is the engineering of persistence. By recognizing our role as negentropic agents, we can move beyond chaotic tribalism toward a global system capable of withstanding external entropy. We love because it is the only way to build a structure large enough to survive.
