The Metaphysical Audit: Dissolving Philosophy’s "Hard Problems" via the Ghost Filter
This document applies the Ghost Filter — a diagnostic procedure from Thermodynamic Realism — to philosophy's "hard problems." The tool is explained in full in the companion post "Thermodynamic Realism: Diagnosing Whether a Question Has a Domain". Each problem is audited honestly. The authors are Andraž Đurič and Claude (Anthropic). This document is open to revision.
On Filter 4 (Necessity): This filter asks whether a selection, thermodynamic, or informational pressure requires the agent to maintain the model. A flag means no such pressure exists; maintaining the model is a net cost with zero persistence return. Why, then, do ghost models dominate human history? Because they are evolutionary spandrels — operators that are vital within their local domain (cause-seeking, agency detection, purpose-inference) misfire when extended past the boundary where they have content. The ghost model survives by piggybacking on a territorial operator. It is a cross-firing, not an adaptation. Dissolving it reduces the Consistency Tax. Ghost-hunting is itself persistence-relevant.
1. "Why Is There Something Rather Than Nothing?"
Filters 1–2: Passed. A human asks; persistence conditions specifiable.
Filter 3 (Model): Flagged. The question's "nothing" refers to absolute nonexistence — a non-state with no physical properties, no location, no time, no causal powers. It is not the quantum vacuum (a structured, low-energy field state). Absolute nothing has no referent. More precisely: the ghost is not the word "nothing" alone. It is the pairing of the cause-operator "why" with a domain that structurally denies causality. "Why" requires a prior physical state to serve as the antecedent of an explanation. Absolute nothing supplies none — no time, no laws, no potential. The operator is deployed where it cannot do work. Structurally identical to "What happened before the Big Bang?" (a time-operator without time).
Filter 4 (Necessity): Flagged. No pressure to maintain a model of absolute nothing; maintaining it incurs a Consistency Tax. The human distressed by the question is paying that tax. Dissolving the ghost reduces it.
Investigation: (a) Ghost — operator lacks domain. (b) Territorial reformulation: "What physical laws, initial conditions, or necessary structures explain the observable universe?" — valid and addressed by cosmology, but it replaces "nothing" with specified physics. The original question is not that. (c) Not miscalibrated: "Why did the glass break?" passes; "Why is there causation at all?" flags.
Verdict: Ghost. Territorial neighbor: Cosmology's actual question, with "nothing" replaced by physical structure.
2. "What Is the Meaning of Life?"
Two readings: Cosmic ("purpose of existence") and agent-indexed ("what should I value?").
Cosmic Reading
Filters 1–2: Passed.
Filter 3: Flagged. "Meaning" as purpose is agent-relative. The cosmos, at maximal scale, has no Markov blanket and no persistence conditions — it is not an agent. The purpose-operator is deployed without a holder.
Filter 4: Flagged. No pressure to maintain the model.
Investigation: (a) Ghost. (b) Reformulation: "What is God's purpose for us?" shifts the agent to a deity — agent-indexed, a different question. The original cosmic reading remains empty. (c) Not miscalibrated: "What is the meaning of this ritual?" passes; "What is the meaning of all signs?" flags.
Verdict: Ghost. Territorial neighbor: The agent-indexed reading below.
Agent-Indexed Reading
All four filters: Passed. Agent: the asker. Persistence conditions: specifiable. Model: the agent's own life — valence gradients, coupling topology, long-horizon negentropy capacity. Necessity: an agent that does not model what it values cannot prioritize, accumulates divergence, dissolves.
Verdict: Territorial. Answerable by mapping one's persistence conditions and coupling density. Engineering, not mystery.
3. "Do We Have Free Will?"
Two readings: Libertarian ("uncaused cause") and compatibilist ("agent-indexed action selection").
Libertarian Reading
Filters 1–2: Passed.
Filter 3: Flagged. An uncaused cause is an event with no physical antecedent — a causal chain from nothing. "Nothing" is not a physical state (see Problem 1). The cause-operator is outside its domain.
Filter 4: Flagged. No predictive return.
Investigation: (a) Ghost. (b) No territorial reformulation — the core term is incoherent. The compatibilist reading captures the observable territory. (c) Not miscalibrated: "Did the agent choose freely given their model and constraints?" passes; "Was the choice an uncaused cause?" flags.
Verdict: Ghost.
Compatibilist Reading
All four filters: Passed. Agent: the asker. Model: the agent's internal model of its own decision process — physically instantiated, necessary for free energy minimization (the agent must predict its own actions to reduce long-term prediction error). Necessity: without this model, counterfactual evaluation, credit assignment, and learning fail — fatal in high variance.
Verdict: Territorial. "Free" means the choice was generated by the agent's own model, without external override bypassing that model. A physical fact about causal topology.
4. "The Hard Problem of Consciousness"
The problem (Chalmers 1995): Why does physical processing give rise to subjective experience? The "what-it-is-like" character of experience resists functional explanation.
First pass — the entire question: Filters 1–2 pass. Filter 3 flags if "phenomenal consciousness" is defined as an ontologically distinct non-physical property — it then has no model-trackable referent. If defined as a physical phenomenon not yet fully understood (e.g., a compressed description of predictive processing), it passes. The filter cannot settle the definition; it flags the non-physical framing and passes the physical one.
Isolating the ghostly residue: The core often taken to be inescapable is: "Why is there something it is like to be a physical system?" If "what-it-is-like" is posited as irreducible and non-functional, the request for a physical explanation of a non-physical property is a cause-operator without a domain — structurally the Problem 1 ghost. The physical framing asks: "What processes give rise to the self-model that reports qualitative experience?" — a territorial question under active investigation (neurobiology, predictive processing). Thermodynamic Realism provides functional accounts (valence as divergence telemetry, T19; empathy as coupled telemetry, T20) but marks the phenomenal residue as out of scope (§6.4).
Consistency Tax framing: The ghostly framing is not merely a domain violation. It is provably expensive. If the "phenomenal residue" is defined as having zero functional, physical, or behavioral impact on the world, then it cannot interact with any error signal. The agent cannot receive feedback about it. Modeling it would require maintaining a map of an unobservable territory — infinite precision, zero correction, no convergence. That is a textbook Consistency Tax: a map that can never pay rent and can never stop costing. The "Hard Problem" in its non-physical framing does not merely ask an empty question; it commits the agent to an indefinitely accumulating thermodynamic debt.
Verdict: The "hard problem" as an unbridgeable mystery is a ghost — a cause-operator aimed at a non-physical target, and a standing Consistency Tax on any agent that maintains it. The territorial neighbor: "What physical structures give rise to self-models reporting qualitative experience?" — open, and scientific. The Ghost Filter identifies the portion of the question that lacks a domain.

Document status: open to revision. If a territorial reading of any flagged question is found, the verdict will be updated. The Ghost Filter is a tool, not a dogma. Next candidates: the existence of God, the problem of evil, the ontological status of abstract objects, and the "meaning crisis."
