A proposed term for minds that feel the map getting closer as reward, and the prior art that already holds it

1. The term
Some minds do not merely enjoy thinking. They enjoy the felt event of the map getting closer to the territory.
I propose the term fidelity-valenced cognition for the cognitive-affective profile in which this is pronounced: perceived increases in map–territory fidelity are positively valenced — a concept clicking into place, a contradiction dissolving, a vague intuition becoming structurally explicit, a term gaining its relata, a claim correctly demoted — while perceived divergence, contradiction, vagueness, or drift are negatively valenced.
The compact statement: not the love of thinking in general, and not the love of being right, but a reward profile coupled to perceived movement toward correspondence, and an aversion coupled to perceived inconsistency. The pleasure is less “I am clever” than “the map just got closer.” The discomfort is less “I was contradicted” than “this cannot all be true at once.”
This is not a clinical category and not a diagnosis. It is a proposed descriptive construct for a recognisable pattern, offered at the weight of a label.
2. The profile
Two poles define it.
On the positive side, the reward attaches to the event of contact improving, and it arrives as something cognitive, aesthetic, and nearly bodily at once. A sentence that compresses a domain without flattening it; a tangle of cases that suddenly indexes cleanly; a hidden frame named; an overreaching label retired; prior art that locates a piece of work honestly and shows exactly what was and was not new — for a mind of this kind, each is pleasant in the way a resolved chord is pleasant. The reward is for the update rather than the standing, which is why a phrase like ‘less wrong’ lands as a compliment rather than a slight: it praises the direction of travel.
On the negative side, contradiction is not mere irritation. An inconsistency inside a map that is meant to be aligned registers as a cost in the system, a drag, something the mind wants to discharge rather than leave sitting. The aversive case is specific: not disagreement arriving from outside, which can be welcome and useful, but hidden internal divergence — the parts of one's own picture that cannot all be true at once.
3. A relabeling, not a discovery
The term is new; the cluster is not. It is a relabeling of components the literature already holds — and, the part most easily missed, the centre of the cluster is itself already occupied. The components first.

The last row is the one that matters, and the prior-art discipline this corpus runs on requires stating it plainly. It is tempting to claim that no existing name captures the exact centre — the reward attached specifically to fidelity improving. That claim is false. The predictive-processing literature already defines valence itself as the rate at which prediction error is falling: Joffily and Coricelli formalised emotional valence as the negative rate of change of free energy — roughly, of prediction error — over time, more than a decade ago; Fernández Velasco and Loev develop the same idea for metacognitive feelings, casting their valence as the expected rate of prediction-error reduction. That is the centre, stated formally: the feeling of error going down, the map getting closer, is the positive pole of valence as such. So the honest decomposition of fidelity-valenced cognition is the existing valence mechanism multiplied by existing individual-difference traits — high need for cognition, high epistemic curiosity, high dissonance sensitivity. Cross the general mechanism with the traits and the construct reconstructs with little remainder.
So the term is held as a compact label for a real cluster, and at no higher weight than that. As theory there is no residual; the value is the compression, and the caveat that comes with it.
4. Why “fidelity” and not “truth”
Truth is too binary for the lived process. Most cognition does not move from false to true in a single jump. It moves through partial maps, better compressions, narrower scope, cleaner terms, lower overclaim, better calibration, sharper boundaries, more precise failure conditions. That is fidelity.
A map can become more faithful before it is complete. A claim can become less wrong before it is final. A model can improve by demotion, or by losing a misleading name. Fidelity-valenced cognition is therefore not the love of truth in the binary sense. It is the reward profile of a mind that experiences movement toward better correspondence as meaningful — which is why the construct is indexed to fidelity, a graded quantity, and not to truth, a terminal one.
5. The signals are not verdicts
The construct carries a warning at its centre, and the warning has empirical teeth. The feeling of higher fidelity is not evidence of higher fidelity.
The Aha experience fires on wrong answers. Danek and Wiley had people work through hard problems and rate each solution; the sudden, pleasurable Aha! accompanied incorrect solutions too — false insights — often enough that the feeling cannot serve as a marker that a true insight has occurred. The pleasure of resolution is not a correctness signal. And fluency inflates perceived truth independently of truth: ease of processing raises positive affect and lifts judgments of truth and beauty, so a phrase can feel right because it is easy to process, not because it corresponds. A clean compression buys fluency whether or not it preserves the structure underneath.
So the fidelity-pleasure is a candidate-detector, not a truth-oracle. It marks that something compressed. Whether the compression is faithful is a separate question, settled by sources, prior art, falsifiers, and contact with the territory — never by the feeling that started the search.
The aversive pole takes the matching discipline. Contradiction-pain is useful, but not every tension is an error. Some tensions are genuine contradictions; some are level-confusions waiting to be separated; some are apparent contradictions produced by a missing index; some are open frontiers; some are rival models meeting the territory at different resolutions and worth holding rather than collapsing. So the pain should trigger classification, not panic: inspect the joint before cutting it. Ask whether the two claims share an index, whether the conflict is semantic or empirical, whether it is error, level-confusion, or frontier — and only then decide whether to revise, demote, split, or hold open.
6. What the term is for
The value of the term is not a new mechanism; the mechanism is old. It is a compact label for a real reward profile, and a reminder of what that profile is and is not.
It is worth naming because it names the affective basis on which a discipline of correction can be sustained. Demotion, prior-art location, recalibration, the retirement of a favoured word — these are easier to carry out, and easier to want, for a mind that experiences the resulting gain in fidelity as reward, and that finds hidden inconsistency hard to leave alone. A programme of fidelity runs more readily on cognition shaped this way.
But the same coupling is exactly why such a programme is needed rather than optional. A mind that finds compression pleasant will feel the pleasure whether or not the compression is faithful; a mind that finds inconsistency aversive will be tempted to resolve tensions that were frontier structure rather than error. The profile is the engine and, in the same stroke, the reason the engine must be governed. The term points at both, and is held at the weight of a label, claiming nothing more.
Standing of this document. A position note proposing a descriptive term. The construct (§§1–2) is offered at the weight of a compact label, not as a contribution: it is a relabeling of an existing cluster (§3), and its centre — valence as the rate of prediction-error reduction — is shown to be already occupied in the cited work. The conceptual point that fidelity, not truth, is the graded quantity the reward tracks (§4) is argued, not proved. The caveat that the fidelity-pleasure is a candidate-detector and not a truth-signal (§5) is grounded in the cited findings on false insights and processing fluency. On any conflict with the apex synthesis or the modules, they govern. Corrections and counterexamples are welcome and change the note.
