The Wizard's Error Is Delocalization
The Wizard's Error Is Delocalization
A single diagnostic for ought, number, meaning, and modality
Diagnostic essay · one error, located across the domains where it recurs
Version 1.1 · June 2026
Every recurring mystery in this family, ought, number, meaning, modality, is a relation across a boundary re-described as a free-floating essence once its relata are stripped. Two camps sustain the error from opposite ends: the wizard, who places the essence outside physics, and the reductionist, who reads it off the substrate. The repair is to relocate the phenomenon to the relational, agent-relative level of physical description, where it is determinate; the instrument is a single test, name the relata. The piece marks what it leaves open, defers consciousness with a stated lead rather than in silence, and states the premise it rests on and could fall with.
1. The claim
Every recurring mystery in this family is a constrained relation across a boundary, re-described as an intrinsic free-floating essence once its relata, the terms a relation holds between, are removed. The stripping manufactures the mystery. Restore the relata and the term resolves into determinate physical structure. Refuse to restore them and what remains, the residue, has no referent.
2. The same move, already solved
The pattern is not a conjecture for the solved cases. It is the record of how they were solved.
| Phenomenon | Essence posited | Relation that replaced it |
|---|---|---|
| Life | élan vital, an animating substance | self-maintaining disequilibrium across a membrane |
| Heat | caloric, a substance of warmth | the mean kinetic energy of its particles |
| Chemical bonding | affinity, a tendency inside matter | electron configuration minimizing energy |
| Infectious disease | miasma, a noxious essence in the air | pathogen and host interacting across a barrier |
In none of these was the essence located and then discarded. It was dissolved by finding the boundary and the constraint. Once those were named, nothing intrinsic was left to explain.
3. Two failure modes, opposite in appearance, identical in error
Two levels of physical description are in play, and the family of errors lives in confusing them. The agent-blind, substrate-level description is physics with no agent picked out: particles, fields, dynamics. The agent-relative, system-level description carves out a particular system and its ends. Both are physical. The unsolved cases stall because two camps conflate them from opposite ends.
The wizard places the essence outside physics, on the grounds that it is not present in the agent-blind description. This is dualism and platonism. The essence becomes a thing with no physical location, and therefore no referent.
The reductionist reads the essence straight off the agent-blind description: value is what survival requires, thermodynamics makes the arithmetic true. This over-generates, because the substrate runs the error and the self-sacrifice exactly as readily as the correct step and the survival. The substrate does not distinguish them. The agent-relative level does.
The repair is neither to expel the phenomenon from physics nor to derive it from the substrate. It is to relocate it to the agent-relative level, where it is determinate. Every gap in this family, is and ought, abstract and concrete, is a gap between two physical descriptions, never a gap between physics and something else.
4. The diagnostic: name the relata
A portable test follows.
- Take the disputed term X.
- Name X's frame, the relativizing context it is defined against: which agent, which system, which constitutive rules, which laws.
- If the frame can be named, X is a determinate relational physical fact. It is located. It is true or false relative to its frame. It is neither free-floating nor read off the substrate.
- If the proponent refuses, holding that X obtains with no agent, no system, and no frame, then X has no truth-conditions. It is the residue. The refusal to name a frame is the wizard's signature.
This converts one question, in what frame, into a well-formedness test. A term that cannot answer it is not false. It is ill-formed.
5. Domain audit
| Domain | Frame to name | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Ought | an agent and its ends; not-X dissolves the agent's persistence conditions | clean |
| Validity (logic, arithmetic) | a constitutive system, its rules abstracted from how discrete individuals aggregate and shared by agents; tokens physical | clean |
| Meaning, aboutness | a coupling across a boundary by which internal state tracks external state | clean, modulo open problems in the theory of content |
| Modality (necessity, possibility) | the configurations realizable relative to a system and its laws | partly open: clean given the laws, open at what grounds the laws |
5.1 Audit: Non-natural normative facts (Parfit)
The domain audit in §5 omits the most persistent holdout in the ought family: the non-natural normative fact. This section supplies the missing audit, applying the diagnostic of §4 directly to the position Parfit (2011) defends in On What Matters. The result is that non-natural normative facts are the residue, an essence with its relata stripped, and that the refusal to supply a frame is the wizard's signature.
The position
Parfit holds that there are irreducibly normative facts, truths about what we have reason to do, or ought to do, that are not identical to any natural fact, do not depend on any agent's ends or desires, and carry no ontological commitment to a non-physical realm. They are, in his phrase, "non-ontological" facts. Their truth is independent of any frame. Yet they are, he insists, genuinely reason-giving: a rational agent who grasps such a fact is thereby motivated, or ought to be, without any causal mechanism mediating the grip.
Apply the test
Take the disputed term X: non-natural normative fact (or equivalently, irreducibly normative reason).
Name the frame: which agent, which system, which constitutive rules, which laws?
The non-naturalist faces a fork. Both prongs lead out of the position.
Prong one: refuse to name a frame. This is Parfit's actual route. The normative fact obtains with no agent specified, no system whose persistence conditions fix its content, and no constitutive rules that generate it. It is true simpliciter, not true-for or true-in. The diagnostic delivers its result: the term has no truth-conditions. It is the residue. The refusal to name a frame is the wizard's signature, and the term inherits all three debts laid out in §7: access (how does a physical brain track a fact with no physical footprint?), causal relevance (how does a causally inert fact guide action or obligate reasoning?), and individuation (what makes one such fact distinct from its negation when neither is grounded in anything?). Parfit's "non-ontological" qualifier does not answer these questions; it rebrands the refusal.
Prong two: name a frame. Suppose the non-naturalist retreats and supplies a frame: "rational agents in ideal conditions," "agents under the constitutive aims of practical reason," or some other. The moment a frame is specified, the term becomes a relational physical fact about that agent, that system, those conditions. It is now agent-relative. It resolves into the same structure audited as clean in §5 (ought), and the non-naturalism collapses: the fact was always physical at the agent-relative level, just misdescribed as frame-independent. The retreat walks the non-naturalist through door one of the trilemma.5a
The Consistency Tax addendum
There is a further cost the diagnostic makes visible. A non-natural normative fact, as Parfit defines it, is a map of a territory that, by definition, never sends a signal. It makes no physical difference to the agent's environment; it alters no prediction; it generates no error signal when ignored. To maintain a model of such a fact is to carry a representation with zero predictive return and zero possible correction: a standing Consistency Tax that can never pay rent.5b The agent who insists on tracking non-natural facts does not merely hold a false belief (which can be corrected); they hold an unfalsifiable representation that bleeds free energy indefinitely. The wizard's error is not metaphysically neutral. It is thermodynamically expensive.
Objection: "You're just a verificationist"
The non-naturalist may reply that the demand to name a frame is verificationism in disguise, that truth need not be trackable or causally efficacious to be truth. The diagnostic is not verificationism. It does not assert that untrackable facts are false. It asserts that a term offered with no frame, no relata, and no truth-conditions has not been given content. The burden is on the non-naturalist to supply a criterion that individuates their fact from its negation without appealing to a frame. Parfit's "non-ontological" normative facts supply no such criterion. They are posited to do explanatory work while being defined as doing no physical work: the signature of an essence stripped of its relata. The demand to name the relata is not a demand for empirical verification. It is a demand for the speaker to specify what they are claiming to refer to.
6. Why the clean cases are clean
Ought. "Agent A ought to X" names a physical configuration: A is end-directed and coupled to an environment such that not-X dissolves the configuration A is. It is agent-relative and physically true or false. The free-floating ought, binding on every agent with no agent specified, is the residue. The martyr is the proof that the substrate alone fixes no ought: the martyr is as physical as the survivor, and "persist" is false for it.1 The ought is not absent from physics. It is located one level up from the substrate, at the agent-relative description.
Validity. Keep three things apart. The symbols are arbitrary: tally marks, Roman numerals, and Arabic digits carry the same content, so "2 + 2 = 4" is one notation among many. Internal validity is constitutive: given the successor rules the equation is a theorem, fixed by the rules whether or not anyone has watched two things meet two things, and the substrate does not supply that correctness, since a brain returning 5 dissipates heat like a brain returning 4. The rules, though, are not arbitrary the way chess rules are. They are abstracted to track a real structural feature of the world, how discrete, persistent, non-merging individuals aggregate, which is why no one adopts a system in which 2 + 2 = 5: it would fail to model the pattern. So the equation is true inside a constitutive system, the system is reality-tracking, and the frame is that structure shared by agents who use the same rules. Three relations, all physical: realization in the token, internal truth in the rules, correspondence in the world's aggregation structure. The view is a structuralism of the non-platonist kind, arithmetic as a pattern the world instantiates rather than a realm of abstract objects, grounded for the elementary cases in physical aggregation; like any named position it has its own open disputes, and the diagnosis commits only to the negative claim, that the truth is neither platonic nor a free convention. Platonic necessity, true in no system and for no mind, is the residue. The mirror error, "thermodynamics proves it," collapses these: the world's structure is what arithmetic models and why it applies, not what makes a step legal inside arithmetic.
Meaning. A sign is about its referent when a physical coupling makes the sign covary with the referent under the conditions that matter to the system. Intrinsic aboutness, directedness with no coupling, is the residue.
7. Scope and the load-bearing premise
The diagnosis rests on one premise: representational and relational content is physical, and physical description has levels. This is monism with structure. The argument does not refute a committed dualist or platonist by construction. It relocates the dispute onto that single premise and stakes its claim there.
The claim is that the dualist and the platonist owe a bill they have not paid. If their essence is causally inert and frame-independent, they owe an account of how a physical brain comes to track it,234 how it makes any difference to physical behavior, and what individuates one such fact from its negation when neither is grounded in anything. These three debts, access, causal relevance, and individuation, are long-standing. Payment has been attempted, by appeals to rational intuition and to third-factor and indispensability accounts;5 in my assessment the attempts are weaker than the objections, but they exist, and calling the debt simply unpaid would overstate a contested record. Monism with levels wins on the balance of that ledger, not by default, and the ledger is the only ground the argument needs.
Confidence. High that ought and validity are clean, on the strength of the agent-relativity and constitutive-rule analyses. Meaning is clean modulo the theory of content. Modality is clean given the laws and open at their grounding. More likely than not, not certain, that no domain in this family requires expanding physics rather than relocating within it. This is not a knockdown, and stating it as one would be an error. "You owe access, causation, and individuation, and the attempts so far are weaker than the objections" is a stronger position than "you are speaking nonsense," because the first cannot be dismissed as a hidden verificationism and the second can.
8. Consciousness, deferred
Consciousness is the obvious next candidate, and it is deliberately out of scope here, named rather than smuggled past.
9. Kill condition
The diagnosis fails if a phenomenon in this family can be exhibited that does genuine explanatory work, is trackable by physical minds, and cannot be assigned a frame, that is, obtains with no agent, no system, and no laws, yet is more than a posit. No such case has been produced. Until one is, the standing challenge to anyone defending an essence is the first step of the test: name the frame, or concede the term is a residue.

Standing of this document. This is a diagnostic, not a proof, and not a claim that delocalization is the only error in these debates or that monism with levels is the only tenable view. It is a falsifiable bet: that the named domains resolve by relocation rather than by expanding physics, and that the residue, in each case, is an essence with its relata stripped. The kill condition is in section 9. Corrections and counterexamples are welcome and change the diagnosis.
