Why objectivity is not contextlessness, how claims become answerable to reality, and where indexing stops

Abstract
This essay develops a claim that has been implicit across the Epistemic Forge corpus: objectivity is not the absence of a frame, but the accurate specification of the relations that make a claim determinate.
The motivating slogan is that everything is objective once it is indexed correctly. Stated without qualification, that is too broad. The defensible version separates facts from claims. Relational, level-specific, agent-involving, and perspective-dependent facts can be objective. A truth-apt claim about them becomes objectively assessable when its minimally sufficient index fixes the relevant bearer, relata, level, boundary, coupling, frame, horizon, resolution, and uncertainty.
This yields a diagnostic. Many philosophical and semantic confusions arise when a relational or level-bound term is stripped of the structure that gives it truth conditions and then treated as an intrinsic, contextless property. The repair is localization: restore the missing index, distinguish the level, and identify what would make the claim true or false. The result may be a resolved claim, a split into several claims, a genuine open problem, a term whose ordinary context was merely implicit, or, in the strongest cases, an ill-formed residue with no stable truth conditions.
The account is physicalist and non-eliminative about levels. One ontology does not require one vocabulary. Higher-level patterns can be physically realized and still be real at the scale where they support explanation, prediction, intervention, or compression.
The method is bounded. It does not yet dissolve the phenomenal remainder of consciousness, does not justify logic from outside all inference, and does not by itself establish that persistence exhausts value. It is therefore presented as a position and a falsifiable research program, not as a universal solvent or completed scientific result.
1. The claim
The claim began in its most compressed form:
The sentence points in the right direction, but it collapses several different theses.
Not every utterance is truth-apt. A command, expression, promise, question, or work of fiction may perform a function other than describing a state of affairs. Not every vague sentence becomes meaningful merely by adding detail. Not every interpretation can be rescued by inventing a frame after the fact. And indexing does not make a false external-world claim true.
The more precise position has two parts.
The first is ontological:
The second is semantic and epistemic:
These claims are related but not identical.
The first concerns what kinds of facts can obtain. The second concerns what a sentence must specify, explicitly or through recoverable context, before evidence and argument can bear on it.
Objectivity, on this account, is not a magical property added by removing every relation. It is answerability to reality once the relevant relations have been located.
2. The observer belongs inside some descriptions
A familiar picture of objectivity begins by removing the observer.
Often that is correct. The chemical composition of a sample does not ordinarily vary with the observer's preferences. Adding those preferences would obscure the target rather than clarify it.
But removal becomes distortion when the observer is one of the causal or constitutive relata of the phenomenon.
Pain is not adequately described by tissue damage alone while deleting the organism that undergoes it. Beauty is not exhausted by an arrangement of matter with no perceiver, perceptual system, history, or evaluative architecture. Meaning is not located in a mark alone, independently of the users, practices, and worldly structures it tracks. An ought is not found in the agent-blind substrate without the agent whose conditions distinguish success from failure.
The correct rule is conditional:
Suppose someone reports a demon in the room.
At least three claims must be separated:
- an external entity of the reported kind was present;
- the agent underwent an experience representing such an entity as present;
- the process producing that representation reliably tracked the external environment.
The first may be false. The second may be true. The third may explain why the two diverged.
Indexing does not vindicate the demon. It locates the experience and prevents a fact about representation from being confused with a fact about the represented world.
Under physicalism, the subject and the experience remain processes within reality. Asymmetry of access is an epistemic difficulty, not automatic metaphysical exile.
3. What the index contains
Correct indexing does not mean appending every available detail.
The aim is minimally sufficient localization: enough structure to fix the target, preserve the relevant level, and state the conditions under which the claim succeeds or fails.
The recurring components are these.
- Bearer: what kind of thing could possess the attributed property?
- Relata: what entities, states, systems, or practices are related?
- Level: physical, chemical, biological, psychological, social, legal, semantic, mathematical, normative, phenomenological?
- Boundary: what distinguishes the system from its environment or from neighbouring systems?
- Coupling: how do the relata causally, informationally, functionally, representationally, or institutionally connect?
- Frame or standard: which laws, rules, model, measurement procedure, criterion, or constitutive practice makes the claim assessable?
- Horizon and resolution: over what time and at what grain is the claim made?
- Uncertainty: what is known, estimated, inaccessible, underdetermined, or dependent on an unbuilt model?
Not every claim needs every item stated aloud. Ordinary language carries background context. “It is cold” can be perfectly usable when speaker, place, time, and practical standard are obvious. “The patient is improving” can be determinate within a clinical context even if the sentence does not restate the patient, condition, metrics, and observation interval.
The index is right when it does four things.
It fixes the referent.
It preserves the level at which the phenomenon exists.
It identifies the conditions relevant to truth or successful performance.
And it leaves the claim exposed to correction.
Too little indexing produces ambiguity. Too much produces a description so particular that it cannot generalize or be tested beyond one case.
4. One reality, multiple levels
The ontological position underneath this account is physicalist monism: everything that exists is physically instantiated or reduces to physical structure.
This is not treated as logical certainty. It is the standing hypothesis judged to fit the explanatory record best, and it remains revisable if a genuine counterexample appears.
But one ontology does not require one vocabulary.
A Lego castle is made of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene. The chemical description is true. The architectural description is also true. Learning what the bricks are made of adds a level of explanation; it does not make the castle disappear.
The same structure appears in more serious cases.
Love is physically realized through bodies and nervous systems. A symphony is physically realized in instruments, air, media, and brains. Justice is physically realized through agents, institutions, rules, enforcement, expectations, and consequences.
Reduction in principle does not entail elimination in explanation.
This is the point of The Exclusivity Error. The illegitimate move is not studying the substrate. It is adding the word “just” and treating lower-level realization as proof of upper-level unreality.
But the protection runs in both directions.
A term such as “justice,” “meaning,” “authority,” or “ought” cannot be saved from elimination by allowing it to float free of every bearer, implementation, relation, or practice. A higher-level term must identify something real.
The architecture therefore holds two commitments at once:
Do not build an upper floor with nothing underneath it.
The first blocks eliminative flattening.
The second makes higher-level vocabulary pay rent.
5. Three ways indexing can go wrong
The wizard's error
The wizard searches for meaning, value, validity, purpose, or authority in the agent-blind substrate. Failing to find it there, the wizard relocates it outside physical reality.
Ought becomes a non-natural command.
Meaning becomes intrinsic aboutness.
Number becomes separate furniture.
Authority becomes a property of office that binds independently of what the office does.
The phenomenon is protected by delocalizing it.
But an entity defined as frame-independent and causally disconnected inherits familiar debts. How does a physical mind track it? What distinguishes one purported fact from its negation? What makes successful reference different from a coherent fiction? How could the representation be corrected?
The problem is not merely that the posit is difficult to verify. Its content and truth conditions may never have been supplied.
The flattener's error
The flattener moves in the opposite direction.
Because every phenomenon is physically realized, the flattener tries to read every higher-level distinction directly from the substrate.
Thermodynamics itself commands persistence. Chemistry proves an ethical verdict. Neural activity makes psychological language dispensable. A social institution is declared unreal because no single molecule contains it.
This fails because the substrate realizes every trajectory alike: persistence and dissolution, truth and hallucination, valid inference and error, care and destruction.
The relevant distinction appears only after a system, level, boundary, rule-space, or standard has been selected.
The rescue error
Indexing can also be abused in defence of a preferred conclusion.
A claim fails under one frame, so the frame is changed after the result. A counterexample appears, so the horizon is lengthened or shortened. The bearer is redrawn. The standard is replaced. The level is moved. Each adjustment is locally plausible, but together they ensure that no possible result can count against the claim.
This is not correct indexing. It is retrospective rescue.
A mature version of the method therefore requires stable indexing rules, adversarial cases, and explicit conditions under which the frame itself must change.
6. Name the Relata as a diagnostic
Name the Relata is the operational instrument inside the larger theory.
Take a disputed term or operator.
Ask what kind of thing could bear it.
Name the relata and the relation.
Specify the level, boundary, frame, coupling, horizon, and truth conditions relevant to the question.
Then classify what remains.
Resolved
The restored index produces a determinate claim that can be true, false, probabilistic, or currently unknown.
Bifurcated
The original sentence contained several claims at different levels or under different frames.
Implicitly indexed
The ordinary context already supplied the missing structure. The claim was abbreviated, not defective.
Ill-formed residue
After charitable reconstruction and consideration of plausible rival semantics, no stable bearer, relation, or truth condition can be supplied for a term that purported to state a fact.
Boundary
The diagnostic removes part of the confusion but leaves a genuine explanatory remainder.
Out of scope
The target is not a stripped relational term, or the utterance is performing a non-descriptive function for which truth and falsity are not the primary standards.
The last three outputs are essential.
Without “implicitly indexed,” the method mistakes ordinary linguistic economy for metaphysical failure.
Without “boundary,” it absorbs genuine open problems into its vocabulary.
Without “out of scope,” it becomes a universal solvent and therefore unfalsifiable.
7. The same structure across different domains
Subjective experience
“This hurts” is indexed to a subject, time, bodily and experiential state, and mode of access.
Its subject-dependence does not make the occurrence unreal. Another observer may lack direct access while still possessing indirect evidence through report, behaviour, physiology, and intervention.
The experience-fact and the external-cause fact must remain separate. A person can genuinely feel threatened while being wrong about the source of the threat.
Aesthetic judgment
“This is beautiful” may compress a relation among an object, a perceiver, perceptual capacities, affective state, history, culture, and evaluative standard.
Indexing does not force all aesthetic judgments into private whim. It allows objective questions about the relation: whether the experience occurred, whether it is stable across observers or conditions, which features produce it, how standards cluster, and whether a work succeeds under a declared artistic function.
The object may contribute strongly without carrying beauty as a contextless molecule-level property.
Meaning
A sign does not mean by shape alone.
Meaning involves some combination of producer, user, interpreter, inferential role, convention, causal history, context, function, and relation to what is tracked or represented.
Conceptual-role approaches correctly emphasize that content depends on how a term functions within an inferential web. Externalist and informational approaches correctly emphasize that an entirely self-contained web faces difficulty distinguishing world-directed content from internally coherent emptiness.
Relata-Indexed Objectivity predicts that an adequate account will require both internal role and some form of anchoring or use relation. That prediction is substantive and contested. It is not established merely by naming the relata.
Validity
Formal validity is indexed differently.
Given a formal system, axioms, and rules of inference, some conclusions follow and others do not. The physical token of the proof may be ink, sound, pixels, or neural activity; its validity is not identical to any one token.
Three questions must be separated:
- how the symbols and rule-following activity are physically instantiated;
- whether a conclusion follows inside the formal system;
- whether the system applies to a target structure in the world.
A theorem can be internally valid while a proposed application is inappropriate.
Metatheoretic claims introduce another level. A system's consistency, completeness, or soundness is investigated using some metatheory, which itself employs inferential norms. This does not make all formal systems equal. It means there is no completely inference-free tribunal from which inference as such can be certified.
Authority
Authority is not one intrinsic property.
It relates an authority, an agent subject to it, a domain, a decision, and a standard under which deference is warranted.
A doctor may have epistemic authority concerning a diagnosis while having no corresponding authority over the patient's politics. A court may possess legal authority under a jurisdiction while lacking moral or epistemic authority in a particular case. An institution can preserve distributed knowledge an individual does not possess, but it can also be corrupt, obsolete, or systematically misaligned.
The office is part of the social relation. It is not, by itself, the complete justification.
Modality
Possibility and necessity are usually indexed to a space of configurations, constraints, and laws.
What is physically possible may differ from what is logically possible, technologically possible, biologically viable, legally permitted, or reachable from a specified initial state.
Naming the modal space resolves many apparent contradictions.
It does not by itself answer the deeper question of why these laws or constraints obtain. The method is clean given a modal frame and open at the grounding of the frame itself.
8. The is/ought case
The is/ought problem is one of the central applications of the framework and one of its most exposed joints.
On the position developed in this corpus, there is no categorical ought that binds independently of every agent, system, constitution, environment, or horizon. The universe as such issues no commands.
An ought is instead indexed to an agent or agent-like system.
Once the agent, boundary, environment, capacities, persistence conditions, and horizon are fixed, there are physical facts about what sustains it, what damages it, what preserves its organization, and what drives it toward dissolution.
The proposed semantic reconstruction is:
For the persistence account, that standard is ultimately tied to the continued organization of the agent.
This is not equivalent to prediction.
“The cell will climb the glucose gradient” predicts behaviour.
“The cell ought to climb the glucose gradient” states that climbing is what its viability conditions require in the functional sense at issue. The cell can fail and dissolve. The failed action falsifies the prediction while leaving the viability relation intact.
Two further restrictions remain.
First, a local ought must not be promoted into a categorical one by silently deleting the agent. Removing the bearer does not universalize the claim. It removes part of its content.
Second, a structural reduction is not a specific verdict. Even if all value reduces in content to persistence, it does not follow that the relevant multi-scale model has already been built for this agent in this situation. Biology, psychology, social structure, institutions, coupling, uncertainty, and horizon may all matter.
The is/ought firewall therefore remains useful.
It is not a wall between two ontologies.
It records an indexing requirement and an unpaid modeling debt.
The stronger claim, that every value reduces in content to persistence, remains open. The present method locates that bet; it does not settle it.
9. Where indexing bottoms out
The method eventually reaches its own conditions.
If every claim requires a frame, what frames logic?
If every justification requires inference, what justifies inference?
An attempted answer cannot step outside every inferential norm at once, because arguing for or against a norm already uses some pattern of inference. Particular logics can be compared for consistency, expressive power, inferential consequences, domain fit, and practical success. But the comparison occurs within a metatheory that is not itself inference-free.
This is a form of epistemic circularity, but not every circularity is the same.
“P is true because P is true” is premise-circular. It pretends to supply support while repeating the conclusion.
“Any justification of inferential norms must use some inferential norms” identifies a constitutive limit. The activity of justification cannot certify all of its own conditions from a standpoint containing none of them.
This does not prove that one specific logic is uniquely correct for every domain. It marks the level at which external validation gives way to comparison within shared inferential practice.
The same caution applies to existence and ultimate grounding.
We can ask why a particular state occurred, why these laws describe a domain, or what earlier structure generated an observable universe. Those are contentful questions within some causal or explanatory framework.
At the level of total reality, an external ground cannot be specified without ceasing to be external to the totality being described. That does not prove that all explanatory structure must be spatially outside, that reflexive explanation is impossible, or that reality has no internal generative order. It supports only the narrower conclusion: the ordinary demand for another external reason may bottom out or change meaning at the maximal frame.
“It is what it is” is not an explanation of contingent structure.
It is a limit marker.
The tautology says nothing about which world obtains. Its role is to show that, once every external term has been removed, repeating existence cannot provide another layer of explanation.
Relata-Indexed Objectivity therefore does not claim a view from outside all frames.
It applies the localization demand until localization reaches the constitutive conditions of inquiry, then marks the boundary rather than pretending to transcend it.
10. What the method does not yet solve
A bounded method must say where it stops.
Consciousness
Part of the consciousness problem may belong to the delocalization family.
A physically identical philosophical zombie is not a physically distinct alternative after every physical difference has been denied. Questions about report, access, integration, self-modeling, and the contrast between being a state and representing a state may also be clarified by separating levels and modes of access.
But a remainder persists:
It has not been established that this is merely another relation with a missing index. A theory of self-modeling may explain access and report without explaining phenomenal character.
The current classification is therefore “boundary,” not “resolved.”
Non-descriptive language
Not every meaningful utterance states a fact.
Commands direct. Promises commit. Questions request. Expressions display a state. Institutional declarations can alter social relations under accepted procedures.
These acts still have relata, conditions of success, and physical realization, but they should not all be forced into ordinary truth conditions. Their objectivity concerns whether the act occurred, what practice enabled it, what commitments followed, and whether its uptake succeeded.
Prototype and family-resemblance concepts
Some useful concepts may have graded or overlapping application rather than one necessary-and-sufficient essence.
Indexing can clarify which use is active without guaranteeing a perfectly sharp boundary. “Game,” “species,” “person,” “institution,” and “agent” may remain contested at the margins even when their central cases are clear.
A fuzzy boundary is not automatically a ghost.
The reach of the method
The method targets a family of errors: relational, frame-bound, level-specific, or bearer-dependent terms used as though they were contextless intrinsic properties.
It does not follow that every philosophical problem belongs to that family.
11. From philosophical thesis to research program
The framework should not be protected by elegance.
It should be run.
The empirical hypothesis is:
The null hypothesis is:
A first study could construct a corpus of disputed claims from philosophy, ethics, law, politics, aesthetics, science, artificial intelligence, and ordinary argument.
Each claim would receive at least three versions:
- the original formulation;
- a length-matched generic clarification produced without the relata-indexing protocol;
- a version produced by the full protocol.
Where possible, a fourth version should be prepared by a domain expert who does not know which hypothesis is being tested.
Independent raters, blind to condition, would then answer questions such as:
- What would make the claim true or false?
- What evidence would bear on it?
- Which entities or systems does it concern?
- At which level is it asserted?
- What exactly do opposing sides disagree about?
- Is the claim meaningful, ambiguous, false, non-descriptive, or ill-formed?
- How confident are you that another careful reader would interpret it the same way?
Possible measures include:
- inter-rater agreement about truth conditions;
- agreement about relevant evidence;
- number of distinct interpretations elicited;
- successful localization of the disagreement's crux;
- false-positive “ghost” classifications;
- transfer to new domains not represented in the training examples;
- and whether the method improves later prediction, decision, or resolution rather than clarity ratings alone.
The test should include adversarial cases selected by critics of the framework, not only examples chosen because the method handles them well.
Classification rules and primary outcomes should be fixed before the results are inspected. Otherwise the rescue error returns at the level of the study.
12. Falsification and kill conditions
The framework can fail in several distinct ways.
Semantic counterexample
A term inside the claimed family performs stable explanatory work, supports determinate truth conditions, is trackable by physical agents, and still requires no relevant bearer, relation, frame, rule-space, law, practice, or coupling.
One clear case would force the diagnostic's scope to contract or its semantic premise to change.
No advantage over generic clarification
In blinded tests, the protocol performs no better than an equally careful ordinary rewrite on truth-condition identification, evidence selection, or crux localization.
In that case the theory may remain philosophically suggestive while failing as a distinct instrument.
Unreliable classification
Independent trained users cannot agree when the method applies, which indices are relevant, or whether an output is resolved, implicit, ill-formed, boundary, or out of scope.
A diagnostic whose outputs depend almost entirely on the operator's prior commitments has weak intersubjective standing.
Systematic overreach
The method repeatedly labels genuine unresolved phenomena as ghosts, especially when the phenomena resist the framework's preferred naturalization.
Consciousness is a standing pressure test here.
Index laundering
The framework's users can preserve any conclusion by redrawing boundaries, changing horizons, or replacing standards after counterexamples appear.
If no principled rule distinguishes legitimate re-indexing from retrospective rescue, the method becomes immunized against correction.
Normative collapse
The indexed ought turns out to add nothing beyond prediction, preference, or stipulated goal-following, while continuing to borrow the force of ordinary normative language.
Alternatively, categorical force is quietly reintroduced after being denied.
Either result would require revision of the is/ought application.
Level arbitrariness
The framework cannot distinguish a real higher-level pattern from an arbitrary redescription using explanatory, predictive, compressive, causal, functional, or intervention-relevant criteria.
Then “name the level” becomes permission to posit whatever level is convenient.
Failure of the foundation
The underlying physicalism would be broken by a real phenomenon shown not to be physical and not to reduce to physical structure.
This is a break-condition for the ontology, not for every local use of indexing. The two levels of failure should not be conflated.
13. What success would look like
The prediction is not that indexing will make people agree.
Two parties may share a precise formulation and still disagree about evidence, values, boundary choice, institutional aims, or acceptable risk.
The narrower success condition is:
Instead of arguing whether justice is simply “real” or “fake,” disputants identify whether they disagree about agents, harms, entitlements, procedures, institutional functions, distribution rules, or standards.
Instead of arguing whether morality is “objective” in one undifferentiated sense, they distinguish categorical normativity, agent-relative requirements, social coordination rules, personal evaluations, and empirical consequences.
Instead of arguing whether logic is invented or discovered without qualification, they distinguish physical tokens, constitutive validity, rule selection, metatheory, and application to worldly structure.
Clarity is not yet truth.
But a claim whose bearer, level, evidence, and failure conditions are visible is in a better position to be corrected than one whose ambiguity protects it from contact.
The method succeeds scientifically only if this improvement can be demonstrated against controls.
It succeeds philosophically if it identifies a real and recurrent error-shape without pretending that every hard question has that shape.
14. The architecture, compressed
Reality is one, but it is not flat.
Its facts can be intrinsic or relational, local or distributed, level-specific, frame-dependent, agent-involving, and accessible through asymmetrical perspectives.
None of those properties alone makes a fact arbitrary or unreal.
A claim about such a fact becomes objectively assessable when enough of its structure is fixed for truth, falsity, uncertainty, or successful performance to have determinate conditions.
Many philosophical confusions arise when this structure is deleted.
The wizard mistakes absence at the substrate level for existence outside physics.
The flattener mistakes physical realization for the unreality of higher-level organization.
The rescuer moves the frame whenever a conclusion is threatened.
The repair is localization:
Where this produces stable truth conditions, the claim becomes answerable.
Where it splits one sentence into several, the dispute becomes cleaner.
Where context was already implicit, ordinary language is left intact.
Where no stable content survives charitable reconstruction, the residue can be rejected as ill-formed.
Where a genuine remainder persists, the method stops.
At the deepest edge, logic cannot be justified from outside every inference, and total reality cannot be given an external ground without changing what “total” means. The architecture marks constitutive self-support and brute remainder rather than disguising them as completed explanation.
The whole position can be compressed into one sentence:
That is Relata-Indexed Objectivity.
Not a view from nowhere.
A view that says exactly where it is.
Standing of this essay
This is a position and research-program note, not a completed scientific result.
The strongest part is the bounded claim that relational, level-specific, frame-dependent, and subject-involving facts can remain objective, and that many claims become more assessable when their relevant indices are made explicit.
The diagnostic claim is stronger and more exposed: that a recurring family of philosophical and semantic confusions is produced by stripping those indices and treating the residue as an intrinsic property or mystery. The method's value depends on whether that family can be identified reliably and whether the protocol outperforms generic clarification.
The physicalist and level-structured background is a standing, defeasible commitment. The account is reductive in ontology and non-eliminative in explanation: higher-level patterns do not become separate substances, but neither are they automatically replaced by lower-level descriptions.
The is/ought application remains conditional on the corpus's semantic proposal that practical oughts are agent-indexed requirements, ultimately grounded in persistence conditions. Physicalism does not force that proposal, and the stronger reduction of all value to persistence remains open.
Logic and ultimate grounding are treated as foundation-edge cases. The claim is not that every specific logical rule proves itself or that all why-questions are meaningless. It is that justification cannot validate all inference from an inference-free standpoint, and that an external ground of total reality cannot be named without changing the frame.
Consciousness remains the principal boundary case. The method may clarify access, representation, and zombie intuitions while leaving phenomenal character unexplained.
No blinded empirical study of the protocol has yet been conducted. The proposed research program, controls, measures, and kill conditions are included so that the framework can become vulnerable to evidence rather than protected by conceptual elegance.
The framework should be judged by whether it improves correction, not by how much territory it can absorb.
