An ought that binds every agent without binding independently of any agent

Abstract
This corpus holds that every ought carries an agent in its index and that no categorical ought exists. One ought appears to threaten that position by binding every agent without exception: for every agent A, A ought not undergo A’s own residue-free dissolution. It does not threaten it. Universal quantification over agents is not agent-independence. The ought is non-escapable because only a persister can be addressed by an ought at all, so its antecedent is guaranteed by the act of addressing — but the agent remains in the index, and stripping the agent leaves nothing behind. The published falsification condition for the structural claim is untouched.
Three separate arguments support it, answering three different objectors: an immunity argument, an instrumental argument, and a pragmatic argument against the agent who concedes the semantics and declines anyway. The tautology of persistence carries none of the load. The note also fixes the trade this ought sits on — the more categorical the formulation, the more analytic; the more contentful, the more defeasible — and takes the analytic side deliberately. It closes by separating the reflexive ought from transitive oughts about other agents, which sit at a different quantifier position and remain open.
Epistemic key
Claims here do not inherit confidence from one another by appearing in the same argument. Confidence grades are ordinal and claim-specific: very high, high, moderate, low, or open. “Conditional” grades confidence in an implication given its premises, not confidence that the premises obtain. 1. The statement
The ought. For every agent A: A ought not undergo A’s own residue-free dissolution.
Residue-free dissolution is dissolution that leaves no contribution to the persistence of any persister — not to a coupled agent, not to a successor structure, not to the agent’s own lineage. The qualifier is doing all the restrictive work and is not decoration.
The ought is universal in quantification, agent-relative in index, and reflexive in scope. It concerns what A owes A’s own continuation. It says nothing about what any other agent owes regarding A. That separation is §5.
2. Why this is not a categorical ought
The Is/Ought Firewall states what would break the corpus’s structural claim: an obligation that binds independent of any agent’s constitution, derivable from descriptive facts alone, with no agent in its index.
The ought in §1 fails every clause of that condition. Its force comes entirely from the agent’s constitution — from the fact that A is a persister and that dissolution ends A. It is not derivable from descriptive facts alone; it requires the agent-relativity premise. And A stands in its index explicitly. Remove the agent and nothing remains to be obligated.
What makes it feel categorical is that its antecedent cannot fail for anyone it can reach. Only a persister can be bound by an ought, and every persister has this condition. So the antecedent is guaranteed by the act of addressing. That yields a hypothetical imperative nobody can step outside of, which is a different thing from an unconditional one.
The distinction. Universal quantification over agents is not agent-independence. An ought that binds every agent and an ought that binds independently of every agent are not the same ought, and only the second would break the firewall.
Naming this “categorical” would import Kant’s sense and hand an objection away for free. Non-escapable is the accurate word.
Position relative to three neighbours
Foot (1972) runs the same dissolution of the categorical into the hypothetical, but her conditional stays escapable: the man unmoved by morality is convicted of villainy, not of inconsistency. Here the antecedent is not optional. The non-optionality is bought by narrowing scope to the one condition no agent can decline while remaining an agent — the note claims no more than that purchase pays for.
Korsgaard’s constitutivism is the closest structural relative, but her standards are constitutive of the form of agency. This runs through the material condition of a persister. The two routes can come apart, and only the second is available to a framework whose floor is thermodynamic.
Williams (1979) indexes reasons to the agent’s actual motivational set. This corpus indexes the ought to what actually sustains the agent. The difference is load-bearing: an agent can be wrong about what sustains it, and cannot be wrong about having a sustaining relation at all.
3. What holds it up
The tautology carries no load. What persists, persists is definitional; it fixes the terms and supplies no premise. The work is done by three arguments, which answer three different objectors and should not be merged.
Immunity (transcendental)
“Why ought one persist?” is malformed in the way “what happened before time?” is malformed. With no time there are no events to be the answer. With no persister there is no bearer of reasons, so no reason can be mounted against persistence-as-such: any such reason presupposes the standing it argues against.
This delivers unassailability, not mandate. It establishes that the position cannot be argued down. It does not by itself establish an obligation.
Mandate (instrumental)
Consider an agent deliberating about residue-free self-dissolution. Any reason favouring the act would have to appeal to something valued. The act forecloses all valuing and leaves no beneficiary, by construction of “residue-free.” So no reason can favour it, while reasons favour its alternatives for anything the agent values at all.
The ought follows instrumentally, with no categorical premise anywhere in the derivation. This is the argument that produces the obligation.
Against the agent who declines (pragmatic)
Enoch’s shmagent concedes the semantics and declines to be an agent in the relevant sense. He is not asking the malformed question, so the immunity argument does not touch him.
He is answered instead by the content of his own move: on the residue-free branch nothing he does serves anything, the declining included. And the moment he asserts anything — including the decline — he has instantiated the antecedent. The objection cannot be run from a position outside it.
The violation is self-erasing
There is no moment at which this ought is violated and has a bearer. The structure is Epicurus’s: where dissolution is, the agent is not. This does not weaken the ought, because oughts address deliberators rather than remains. The binding is entirely ex ante, at the moment of deliberation, when the agent exists and the reasons apply to it. Stating this explicitly forecloses the reading on which the ought absurdly obligates a corpse.
4. The trade, and where the black hole belongs
Persistence is graded and binary only at an absorbing barrier: dissolution with no return. Above the barrier lies a gradient of endurance. A black hole is the cleanest instance of that barrier in known physics, and that is its role here — illustration, not derivation.
The physics is worth stating precisely, because it is stronger than a bare appeal to certain death. Mass crossing a horizon increases horizon area; horizon area is entropy (Bekenstein 1973); and the classical area theorem (Hawking 1971) forbids the area from decreasing. For an infalling body the magnitude is negligible — a human is on the order of 10−29 of a solar mass — but the direction is maximal and provably one-way, and no residue returns to any exterior persister. Only the sign matters to the argument; the magnitude is irrelevant to it.
Two honest qualifications. Semiclassically the classical area theorem does not hold, since Hawking radiation (1975) shrinks the hole, and the information question remains unsettled. Neither touches the ought, which requires only that no residue be accessible to any persister, not that information be destroyed.
The reason the black hole cannot carry the derivation is the shape of the trade:
The trade. The more categorical the formulation, the more analytic it becomes. The more contentful, the more defeasible.
“One ought not fly into a black hole” is the contentful version, and it falls to a single possible case: transmit data up to the horizon, act as a decoy, shed mass a vessel cannot carry. Contrivance does not save a universal claim, because one possible case is enough. The residue-free formulation is the analytic version and holds. Given a framework that already treats a tautology as load-bearing, taking the analytic side costs nothing it was not already paying.
5. Reflexive and transitive oughts
“X ought to be dissolved” — said of an agent judged to be an enemy of some other persister — looks like a counterexample and is not one. It sits at a different quantifier position.

Both can hold of the same person simultaneously without contradiction, and the framework predicts exactly that. Indexed to A, A ought not dissolve. Indexed to a persister A threatens, that persister has reason to see A gone. There is no fact about what A ought simpliciter, because adjudicating between the two indices would require the free-floating ought this corpus dissolves. This is name the relata applied to a single sentence carrying two readings.
Two consequences follow, and the second is the one worth keeping.
A third-party dissolution-wish can never function as a reason addressed to its target. Compliance would require the target to violate the one ought no agent can shed, and no reason of the target’s own can be constructed for it. Such statements express the speaker’s persistence interest. Where they are acted on, they are acted on through coercion, containment, or force — which is a fairly exact account of why this class of conflict is never resolved by argument.
And no aggregation function turns headcount into index. That many persisters share the wish adds no normative weight the wish did not have singly. Where the transitive ought gets its content, if it gets any, is coupling density — and coupling density remains the corpus’s named open crux.
6. Direction, not threshold
If dissolution is thermodynamically guaranteed on a long enough horizon, this is an ought every agent will eventually violate. That is not a contradiction; it is a change of character. The ought is a direction — persist longer, keep the barrier further away — rather than a threshold that can be permanently cleared.
This is consistent with the corpus’s existing position that persistence is graded above the barrier and binary only at it. It adds no commitment.
7. What remains open
The token/lineage line. “Residue-free” excludes the case where the dissolution of an instance serves a lineage that instance belongs to. That exclusion is doing real work and the line it draws is not yet drawn. It is the same line on which the ordinary self-sacrifice case sits, and on which any bet on propagation through a successor structure sits. The ought is near-inviolable for lineages and defeasible for tokens; the boundary between them is owed.
Coupling density (κ). Unchanged and unaddressed here. The transitive side of §5 lives in it.
The content reduction. The corpus-level bet that all value reduces in content to persistence is untouched by this note and is not a premise of any argument in it. Only the enabling condition is used.

9. What would break this
- A genuine categorical ought. An obligation binding independent of any agent’s constitution, derivable from descriptive facts alone, with no agent in its index. This would break the corpus’s structural claim rather than this note, which is the corpus’s own stated falsifier and remains unmet.
- A reason for residue-free self-dissolution. A case in which an agent has a reason favouring the act that does not covertly appeal to some residue. This would break the mandate argument in §3 and with it the ought.
- A reason-bearer that is not a persister. A coherent specification of something to which reasons apply and which has no continuation conditions. This would make “why ought one persist?” well-formed and remove the immunity argument.
- Index laundering. If the token/lineage line in §7 cannot be drawn in advance, and “residue-free” is instead adjusted after each counterexample by moving the boundary or the horizon, the ought becomes unfalsifiable and should be withdrawn rather than defended. This is the most likely failure mode and it is procedural, not metaphysical.
Standing of this note
This is a clarification inside the is/ought firewall lineage. It introduces no new commitment, amends no published position, and closes no open question. Its job is to name a form — the non-escapable agent-relative ought — and to deny in advance the reading that would mistake it for a categorical one, because “binds every agent” and “binds independently of every agent” collapse easily in a reader’s hands and the framework’s whole structure sits on the difference.
Current position. An ought can bind every agent without exception and still carry an agent in its index. The prohibition on residue-free self-dissolution is such an ought: non-escapable because only a persister can be addressed by it, near-analytic because it is stated at the level where no counterexample is available, and agent-relative because stripping the agent leaves nothing behind. It is not the free-floating ought returning by another door. It is what the absence of that ought looks like from inside an agent.
