The general solvent for one family of philosophical mysteries, what defines the family, and where it ends
Position and method note · the diagnostic consolidated, its domain characterized, and its boundary located
Version 1 · June 2026
One move runs under most of this corpus, and this note states it on its own, with its scope drawn and its edge marked. The move is a diagnostic for a particular kind of philosophical mystery, and the claim made for it here is deliberately not the largest claim available. It is not that the diagnostic is a universal solvent that dissolves every hard question. That larger claim is false, and it is false in a way the diagnostic itself detects, which is the first thing to get straight, because getting it wrong is the exact error the method is about.
1. The claim, and its own frame
The claim is this. There is a family of recurring philosophical mysteries, and every member of it is a relation across a boundary that has been re-described as a free-floating essence once its relata are stripped. The relata are the terms a relation holds between. Strip them, and what looks like a deep intrinsic property is a grammatical residue: a word with the form of a referring expression and nothing left to refer to. Restore them, by naming the frame the term is defined against, and the mystery resolves into determinate physical structure. Refuse to restore them, and the term has no truth-conditions: it is not false, it is ill-formed. The diagnostic is the operation that forces this choice, and it is portable, the same two steps every time.
Before applying it to anything, apply it to the claim just made, because a diagnostic that cannot survive its own test has no standing to be run on others. Take the disputed term: name-the-relata is a general solvent. Name its frame. A solvent for what? If the answer is "for everything, universally," the claim has had its own relata stripped: a solvent with no specified class of what it dissolves is the free-floating essence its own method condemns, and the word "universal" is precisely the index-removal the diagnostic exists to catch. So the claim is not that. It is bounded, and the bound is its frame: the diagnostic is the general solvent for the family of terms whose semantics is referential-relational and whose frame has been stripped. That class is its relata. Named, the claim is contentful and testable. Unnamed, generalized to "everything," it would be a ghost by its own lights. The paper passes its own test by stating the class it operates on and refusing the one word, universal, that would make it fail.
2. The diagnostic
Two steps. Take the disputed term X, an ought, a validity, a meaning, a modality. Name X's frame: which agent, which system, which constitutive rules, which laws is it defined relative to. If the frame can be named, X is a determinate relational physical fact, true or false relative to that frame, located, neither free-floating nor read off the bare substrate. If the proponent refuses, holding that X obtains with no agent, no system, and no frame at all, then X has no truth-conditions and is the residue, and the refusal to name a frame is the wizard's signature. The diagnostic converts one question, "in what frame?", into a test of well-formedness. A term that cannot answer it is not shown false. It is shown to have said nothing.
3. The record, not a conjecture
That this pattern recurs is not a hopeful generalization. It is the record of how the solved cases were solved. In each, an apparent intrinsic essence was not located and then discarded; it was dissolved by finding the boundary and the constraint, after which nothing intrinsic remained to explain.
| Phenomenon | Essence posited | Relation that replaced it |
|---|---|---|
| Life | élan vital, an animating substance | self-maintaining disequilibrium across a membrane |
| Heat | caloric, a substance of warmth | the mean kinetic energy of particles |
| Chemical bonding | affinity, a tendency inside matter | electron configuration minimizing energy |
| Infectious disease | miasma, a noxious essence in the air | pathogen and host interacting across a barrier |
The move is identical across the four: name the boundary, name the constraint, and the intrinsic essence turns out to have been the name of an unanalyzed relation. The claim of this corpus is that the same move applies to a set of mysteries still treated as open, because they are the same kind of object, relations with their relata removed, not a different kind that happens to resemble them.
4. Two failure modes, one error
The error that manufactures a ghost is made from two opposite directions, and the two camps look like enemies while making the same mistake. Two levels of physical description are in play. The agent-blind, substrate-level description is physics with no agent picked out: particles, fields, dynamics. The agent-relative, system-level description carves out a particular system and its ends. Both are physical. The mysteries stall because the levels are confused.
The wizard places the essence outside physics, on the grounds that it does not appear in the agent-blind description. This is dualism, Platonism, the non-natural normative fact. The essence becomes a thing with no physical location and therefore no referent. The reductionist reads the essence straight off the agent-blind substrate: value is whatever survival requires, thermodynamics makes the arithmetic true. This over-generates, because the substrate runs the error as readily as the correct step, the self-sacrifice as readily as the survival, and does not distinguish them; the distinction lives only at the agent-relative level. The repair is neither expulsion nor reduction. It is relocation to the agent-relative level, where the term is determinate. Every gap in this family, is and ought, abstract and concrete, sign and referent, is a gap between two physical descriptions, never a gap between physics and something else.
5. The audit, and the boundary it draws
Run across the family, the diagnostic produces clean results, and the same audit doubles as a map of where the family ends. The first four rows are inside it. The last is the boundary, and the boundary is the contribution of this section: it is not a domain the method failed to dissolve but the place where the family stops and the method, correctly, stops claiming.
| Domain | Frame to name | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Ought | an agent and its ends; not-X dissolves the agent's persistence conditions | clean |
| Validity (logic, arithmetic) | a constitutive system, its rules abstracted from how discrete individuals aggregate and shared by agents; tokens physical | clean |
| Meaning, aboutness | a coupling across a boundary by which internal state tracks external state | clean, modulo open problems in the theory of content |
| Modality (necessity, possibility) | the configurations realizable relative to a system and its laws | partly open: clean given the laws, open at what grounds the laws |
| Consciousness | self-modeling across a boundary: being a state versus modeling it | boundary: part dissolves, the residue does not, and the method does not claim it |
The first three are clean in the strong sense: name the frame and the term resolves, with meaning carrying the standing caveat that the general theory of content, how any physical state comes to be about anything, is unfinished in naturalized semantics and the verdict inherits that. Modality is clean one level up and open one level down: necessity and possibility are determinate relative to a system and its laws, and what grounds the laws themselves is the open cell, the same open question reached from the cosmological side in the far-edge audit.
Consciousness is where the family ends, and it is worth being exact, because it is the case that shows the method is discriminating rather than universal. Part of the problem is inside the family and dissolves. The zombie intuition, "I can imagine the whole system running with no experience, so experience must be something extra," presupposes a physical difference between the experiencing system and its dark twin that physicalism denies exists; with no physical difference there is no alternative to explain, and the demand for an extra ingredient is a why-question with nothing to range over, a ghost, dissolved by the same diagnostic. But the residue is not in the family. After the zombie intuition is cleared, the question why there is experience at all, why the occupying relation has a felt character given the mechanism, is not obviously a stripped relation, and this corpus does not treat it as one. It is bracketed, named, and left to its own work, not audited as clean and not claimed by the method. That the diagnostic dissolves the confused half and stops at the genuine half is the point, not a shortfall. A solvent that dissolved the residue too would dissolve everything, and a solvent that dissolves everything is to be distrusted, because it would dissolve real things along with ghosts. One that dissolves exactly the residue-shaped confusions and halts at a genuine remainder is doing the discriminating work a method is for. The boundary of the family is the boundary of the method, and the method draws it by dissolving up to it and no further.
6. The load-bearing premise, and why it is forced
The whole diagnostic rests on one premise, stated naked because the corpus forbids hiding it: the operators it audits are referential and relational, their content fixed by what they relate. This is not a consequence of physicalism. A physicalist can instead hold a conceptual-role semantics, on which a term's meaning is its inferential role, the pattern of what follows from it and what it follows from, and that role is itself a physical pattern in a brain, a different physical thing than a referent but physical all the same. On that view the bare categorical ought, deployed with no agent in view, is not contentless: it retains its inferential role, and the role does not vanish because no frame was named. A conceptual-role semanticist can therefore resist every ghost verdict in this note without leaving physicalism for a moment, and pretending otherwise would be the overclaim this corpus refuses. The exposure is real and it is named.
The defense is not to assert the referential reading and hope. It is to show that the escape route forks, and that both branches deliver the diagnostic's verdict.
Branch one, unanchored. Take conceptual-role semantics in its pure form: meaning is inferential role and answers to no relation to the world. Then any internally coherent inferential web is exactly as meaningful as any other, and there is no internal feature that marks one as empty. "Phlogiston" has a crisp role, licenses "released in combustion," connects to "dephlogisticated air," sits in a consistent web, and on pure conceptual-role semantics it is fully meaningful and its inferences valid. What tells you phlogiston is empty is that nothing answers to it, which is a relation to the world the pure view declined to use. The standing objection to conceptual-role semantics is exactly this, that a semantics of inferential role alone cannot distinguish a contentful term from a coherent but empty one, and cannot recover world-directedness. For ghost-detection this is fatal, because ghost-detection just is that distinction. The unanchored branch cannot make it.
Branch two, anchored. So the conceptual-role semanticist anchors the web to the world to escape hollowness, tying some terms to perception and action so the interior inherits content from the edges; the two-factor views are built precisely this way. Then ask what the anchor is, described exactly. Anchoring by mere output-disposition will not do, because a term tied only to a behavior, emitted on no condition the system registers, is a twitch and not a meaning; for the disposition to be content rather than spasm the system must deploy it in the right conditions, which requires that something internal covary with those conditions. That covariance, internal state tracking external condition across a boundary, is the referential relation, the relatum, under another name. The anchor that saves the web from hollowness is reference whether or not it is called that. And name-the-relata applies to the anchored terms unchanged.
There is no third branch. A motor-only anchor with no tracking collapses into branch one's problem, content cannot be told from twitch, while any anchor rich enough to confer content has re-imported the tracking relation of branch two. So the referential reading is not a contestable assumption the method merely hopes holds. It is the relation that any semantics adequate to ghost-detection must contain, whatever vocabulary it uses, because the only semantics that escapes hollowness is one that has smuggled reference back in at the perimeter. Reference is not assumed here; it is forced by the task, the task being to tell whether a term tracks anything, which is nearly the definition of reference.
7. The structural reach
The diagnostic is not confined to the set-piece puzzles. The same operation recurs across this corpus wherever a term has drifted from its referent. In The Last Gradient the lawless outside is a ghost because "cause," "emerge," and "exist" are relational, and a reality with every rule denied supplies no relata for them, so the invocation unsays itself in the saying. In High-Fidelity Maps the demand for one term to one referent per document is name-the-relata applied to writing, and the requirement to state a document's limits is name-the-relata applied to scope, since a map that does not mark where it stops is claiming coverage it did not earn. In The Shape of the Disagreement the word "sex" carries three distinct referents, and the dispute is noise until the relatum in play is named. And the coinage of semantic terrorism names the deliberate stripping of relata to manufacture a ghost that serves a purpose, whose repair is to restore the term to its referent. The diagnostic generalizes because the failure it catches is one operation, term cut from relatum, recurring under many surfaces, not a coincidence of separate tricks.
8. Kill condition
The diagnosis fails if a phenomenon in this family can be exhibited that does genuine explanatory work, is trackable by physical minds, and cannot be assigned a frame, that is, obtains with no agent, no system, and no laws, yet is more than a posit. No such case has been produced, and the standing challenge to anyone defending an essence is the first step of the test: name the frame, or concede the term is a residue.
One distinction guards the kill condition against a tempting misreading. The metaphysical residue of consciousness is not such a counterexample. It is not a frame-less term doing explanatory work that the diagnostic tried and failed to dissolve; it is the boundary the diagnostic dissolves up to, the genuine remainder past which the method explicitly declines to claim. A counterexample would be a term inside the referential-relational family that resisted framing while still referring. The residue is outside the family, marked as such, and bracketed rather than dissolved. Confusing the method's honest boundary with a failure of the method would be its own delocalization, reading a limit as a defeat.
9. A note pointing past this paper
One question is left open on purpose, because answering it would change the epistemic status of the note. Why do minds generate this family of ghosts at all, reliably, and in a single direction, stripping the index rather than ever adding a spurious one? There is a candidate answer, that the stripping is a compression artifact, the index being the expensive part that lossy storage drops, and that name-the-relata is the corresponding decompression. It is an attractive hypothesis and it would explain the directionality. It is also of a different and lower status than anything above, and it owes at least two predictions before it is a mechanism rather than a metaphor: the grain of the error, that ghosts are always index-stripped and never the reverse, and a criterion for which generalities become load-bearing ghosts and which do not. It is marked here and left to a separate treatment, not folded in, because a mechanism asserted without cashing its predictions would be exactly the overclaim this corpus refuses. The method stands without it. The mechanism, if it holds, would explain the method; it is not part of its case.
Standing of this document. A position and method note, not a result, and its parts do not share a status. The diagnostic itself, and its clean verdicts on ought, validity, and meaning, are held at high confidence given the load-bearing premise. The characterization of the family and the location of its boundary, that the method dissolves exactly the referential-relational terms whose frames were stripped and halts at the genuine residue marked by consciousness, is the note's contribution and is offered as the correct scope of a tool the corpus already ran without having scoped. The load-bearing premise, that the audited operators are referential-relational rather than conceptual-role, is the corpus's named exposure and is more exposed here than anywhere else, because here the diagnostic is the whole subject; it is defended in §6 by the binary fork rather than asserted, and that defense presses a real advantage, that reference is forced by the task, without claiming to refute every form of its rival by construction. That every mystery in the family is a stripped relation is refutable by the kill condition, and no counterexample has been produced; the consciousness residue is the boundary, not a counterexample. The compression hypothesis of §9 is a separate and lower-confidence bet, marked and deferred. On any conflict with the corpus, the corpus governs. Corrections and counterexamples are welcome and change the note.
